AFHL Provincial Championship recap: Week one

Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs and Calgary Fire Red are Alberta Female Hockey League provincial champions, capturing their respective divisional crowns at the Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships, presented by ATB.

In the U18 AAA division, Red Deer prevailed in a thrilling 4-3 shootout win over the Calgary Fire at Edmonton’s Bill Hunter Arena. Edmonton Jr. Oilers finished third with a win over the St. Albert Bauer Slash.

Red Deer will now play in the Pacific Regional Championships against a team from British Columbia, in a quest to represent the Pacific Region at the 2023 Esso Cup.

In the U15 AA division, Calgary Fire Red claimed the title, defeating the Edmonton Pandas, 3-2, in the gold medal game. Red Deer hosted the five-team tournament with Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs, Rocky Mountain Raiders and St. Albert Chargers also in contention for the banner. The Chiefs defeated the Raiders, 6-4, to finish third overall.

The AFHL’s U18 AA division will determine its champion during week two of Provincial tournament action, March 30-April 2 in Leduc.

Provincial Championship Merchandise

This year, Hockey Alberta is offering 2023 Provincial Championship merchandise. There are a number of items to choose from and “Champions 2023” can be added to any merchandise purchased after a Provincials tournament.
